Located just above the center of Central America, Guatemala is the heart of Mayan ancestry and contains the most living and concentrated Mayan populations on earth as well as the most known ruins. Many Mayans still practice rites and rituals today with only faint recollections of their meanings or purpose. There are still a few knowledgeable Mayan elders who still understand and practice the ancient beliefs as handed down by word of mouth and ceremony while keeping themselves largely disconnected from the mainstream world.
